Club dive report - July 2025 San Carlos Beach

On Saturday, July 26, I led a couple dives at San Carlos Beach in Monterey. The first dive was an in-water practice session to follow up on the lecture Dennis gave last Saturday on deploying SMBs while underwater. Dan Wilcox, David Sheh, Walt Nissen, and I practiced deploying our SMBs while submerged in 15-20 feet of water. Alan Stanek used the dive as an opportunity to work on weighting and buoyancy control in his new drysuit. Some of also, also practiced orally inflating our BCDs and mask removal and replacement.

We spent about two hours in very calm water with visibility averaging eight feet or so and water temp of 60 degrees. Jane Call visited us, and Debbie Driggers provided shore support.

Walt and I did a second dive that consisted of submerging to the right of the center reef kelp patch and slowly swimming through the kelp at 15-20 feet. We traversed the whole patch, crossed the pipeline to Metridium Field and explored the rocks and kelp patch just past the pipe toward the beach. Highlights of the dive include lots of decorator crabs, a sheep crab, three copper rockfish, and a Hopkins Rose. Visibility varied from 10-15 feet with no surge.
