Well, the ocean was as calm as forecast. South monastery had 6 inch waves. Visibility 35 to 40 feet further out. They were two teams of gonzo divers there, all with DPV – I believe they were going deep in the trench. Their dives were a shorter than my first dive ( of course I was diving a single) and they spent most of it out in the sand doing decompression. I swear one of them must’ve had 100 pounds on their back! Also I got to do a second dive!
So for you folks who are in the DP class, or are using your own DP‘s now, it was a great example of drag. These divers had lots of gear on, including separate deco bottles, doubles, rebreather. I don’t know what else. I noticed that when they were in cruising speed on their vehicles, they were barely moving – looked like gear one for a black tip to me. I was literally motoring around them. I also noticed one of the divers either didn’t have their trim set or was heavy. That is not neutral buoyancy. Probably was heavy – this was the guy with doubles deco tank and some other stuff. In any case, he was decidedly tilted down in the water, dragging along the water while he was trying to move.
I went left that is east towards granite point in point Lobos. Fabulous relief, Corian actress, rockfish sitting on top of the rocks, Ling cod, schools of blacks, and I believe I saw a 6 foot shark take off fast as I came around a corner.
